Educational objectives

The center engages students at the undergraduate to doctoral levels in research, training, and education. Students’ education and training are a primary objective of the research program. All faculty members are engaged with students at all levels.

In the 2014-15 academic year, students in Applied Mathematics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Mechanical Engineering conducted research through the center.

SAE Aero Design East 2014: Aggie Aero

  • April 11-13, 2014, Marietta, Georgia, USA.
  • Advisor: Dr. John Kizito.
  • 42 teams from around the world participated in the regular class competition.
  • Aggie Aero ranked 26 out of 42 competitors.
  • Team consisted of 12 seniors, two juniors, two freshmen and one graduate student.
  • Sponsors: Center for Aviation Safety, N.C. Space Grant, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and College of Engineering.

The aircraft met the design requirements and constraints for the 2014 SAE Aero Design competition.

  • Passed two technical inspections to participate in the flight rounds.
  • First N.C. A&T group to demonstrate electric aircraft design.
  • The team’s debriefing report will educate future teams on electrical circuitry and landing gear and wing structure integrity under dynamic loads.
  • Judged the best senior capstone project at the N.C. A&T Senior Design Expo.

High School Teachers Program

Two teachers from Dudley High School in Greensboro participated in the center’s summer research program. Both teachers have participated in the program for a number of years. Ms. Kizzy Riley (two years) is reproducing zinc oxide nanowire growth on glass substrate. Mr. Warren Berry (four years) is working on microwind turbines for low-wind regions.
