The provost is the chief academic officer of North Carolina A&T, which means he oversees all academic programs — undergraduate, graduate, distance learning and continuing education. The provost leads the Division of Academic Affairs and plays a critical role in strategic planning — working with the chancellor and other senior administrative officers to ensure the ongoing success of this historic institution and our students.

Meet the Provost

Dr. Joe. B. Whitehead Jr. is the provost and vice chancellor of academic affairs at North Carolina A&T State University. Dr. Whitehead has a distinguished career in higher education as a professor, researcher and administrator, most recently serving as dean of the College of Science and Technology at the University of Southern Mississippi. At Southern Miss, he worked to increase multi-disciplinary research opportunities through targeted research initiatives that had a global impact. He earned his bachelor's degree in physics from Delta State University and his master's and doctoral degrees in physics from Kent State University. Dr. Whitehead has received countless awards, honors and recognition throughout his career for his academic achievements and service.
