A&T Professor Voted Chair of Sustainable Energy Association

GREENSBORO - Dr. Abolghasem Shahbazi, professor of bioenvironmental engineering at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, has been elected to chair the North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association.

The association educates and advocates for clean smoke stacks, reduced emissions and greater use of green energy, including solar, wind, geothermal, hydroelectric and biofuels. In one of its recent accomplishments, the association joined with other organizations to successfully lobby the General Assembly to allow consumers to purchase energy from NC GreenPower starting this summer. The association is also asking the legislature to allow consumers who install solar or other
sustainable energy generators at their homes or businesses to sell excess power back to utilities at the retail price.

Shahbazi joined the faculty of the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at N.C. A&T in 1983. In addition to teaching courses in renewable energy and developing distance education courses, he conducts research. His current projects including developing a methane generator which will utilize animal waste, and developing a process to convert cheese whey into biodegradable plastics. He is also conducting a statewide assessment of the crop and forestry residues produced in North Carolina that could be used as biofuels.
