A&T Offers New Online Program in Agriculture Education

Greensboro, N.C. - North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has created a new online degree program
that makes it convenient for community college graduates to study toward a bachelor of science degree in agricultural education.

The program, 2 + 2 Online Studies in Agricultural Education, begins in the fall semester, and is designed for people who hold associate’s degrees in a landscape, turf grass, or a horticultural field from 10 North Carolina community colleges. The curriculum also includes a 15-week student teaching requirement, as well as several courses in other subjects, including English, math, biology health, etc. that can be taken at any community college or four-year university.

The 10 community colleges partnering with the 2 + 2 Program are Brunswick, Caldwell, Catawba, Forsyth, Johnston, Lenoir, Mayland, Sampson, Sandhills, and Surry. Students who have associates degrees in agriculture, horticulture, turf grass management, and related degrees from these colleges are eligible to apply for the 2 + 2 program.

“Many students would like to return to college to earn a teaching certificate, but are unable to do so because of family obligations, work schedules or other personal reasons,” said Dr. Antoine Alston, coordinator of the Agricultural Education Program at A&T.
“We have designed a program in agricultural education that graduates of community colleges can take any time, any place, at
their own convenience.”

The program has an additional benefit of helping to ease the teacher shortage in North Carolina, he added.

The online program can also be an affordable option for many students because fewer fees are required than for on-campus
studies. It has been designed for maximum convenience, enabling students to apply, register, pay tuition and perform other administrative tasks online. Students will also have access to the extensive online resources at A&T’s Bluford Library.

Students should check with 2 + 2 advisors at (336) 334-7711 to plan a course of study based on how their associates degree credits will transfer. They can also find out more at the Web site, http://www.ag.ncat.edu/2plus2.
