GREENSBORO, N.C. -
More
than 30 mass communication and journalism students from North Carolina
Agricultural and Technical State University recently received
copyediting and headline writing tips from a team of editors from the
New York Times.
During
a workshop that was held on January 17 in Barnes Hall Auditorium on A&T's
campus, students held discussions with the Times editors on everything from the nuts and bolts of everyday journalism to the basic principles
of editing and headline writing. In addition, students were given
individual exercises and received one-on-one feedback.
The
workshop, which was free and
open to the public, was hosted by the Department of Speech and Communication.
The training session also attracted students from Bennett College
and some administrative staff members at A&T.
Workshop leaders from the New York Times included Don Hecker, training editor for copy editors; Tony Marcano, enterprise editor on the
Metropolitan Desk; Monica Drake, copy editor on the Metropolitan
Desk; and Benjy Hamm,
managing editor of the Spartanburg (South Carolina)
Herald-Journal, a New York Times regional newspaper.
