Up to 40 employers, many of them multi-national companies, are expected to exhibit, and will have representatives on hand accepting applications. Chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies will be represented, as well as schools, federal and state agencies, professional staffing firms, and food processing companies. Despite the sluggish economy, agriculture remains a solid prospect for job seekers, regardless of their major, says Dr. Alton Thompson, dean of the School. “The great thing about a career in agriculture is that it transcends economic ups and downs,” he observed, “No matter what the economy is doing, people still need to eat. They continue to require safe and affordable housing, clean water to drink and all the other basic needs of daily living that the agriculture sector provides.” Today’s agriculture is far wider in scope than agronomy and animal husbandry. While those continue to be important to the field, agriculture also encompasses life sciences, child development, family and consumer sciences, business and economics, environmental sciences and waste management. Many of the most important advances in biotechnology are emerging from the agriculture sector. For these reasons, agriculture remains the most vigorous industry in the United States, employing millions. Whether students are seeking permanent employment, a summer internship, or just browsing, Career Expo at N.C. A&T is the place for them to explore what today’s agriculture has to offer. Career Expo 2003 is free to attendees. A designated parking lot and shuttle buses will be available for the convenience of newcomers to campus, and signs will be posted as well. More information about the Expo is available by calling (336) 256-2062.
