N.C. A&T Enrollment Increase

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has experienced an overall enrollment growth of two percent this academic school year.  Total students at the University rose from 10,317 for Fall 2008, to 10,554 total students for Fall 2009, exceeding the University’s goal of 10,500 students.  Fall Semester included an:

  • Increase of new freshmen enrollment from 1,636 to 1,911 (17 percent increase);
  • Increase of new graduate enrollment from 429 to 515 (20 percent growth);
  • Increase of new transfer student enrollment from 279 to 383 (37 percent jump).

"This enrollment growth for the Fall 2009 Semester represents the first enrollment increase since Fall 2005, which indicates that the University is now on the positive side of the adjustments and higher enrollment standards," said Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Alton Thompson.

Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management & Admissions Yvette Underdue Murph explained, "two years ago the University deployed an integrated, data driven enrollment management methodology to execute strategies that directly impact growth in student enrollment.  Our Office of Undergraduate Admissions has shifted our paradigm from traditional recruitment methods to 'relationship building' with high school guidance counselors and community college academic advisors."   Underdue Murph also said, "engaging outreach programs with Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) and other community colleges have had a tremendous effect."

Interim Dean of Graduate Studies William Craft said "our classification by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as doctoral high research intensive certainly distinguishes A&T and all our graduate offerings.  We are elated that this year our School of Graduate Studies graduated the largest doctoral class ever with 29 graduates compared to 22 last year."
