MULLINS ELECTED EDITOR-IN-CHIEF OF A&T STUDENT NEWSPAPER
Dexter R. Mullins

Dexter R. Mullins, senior journalism and mass communications major at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, has been elected by the student body to serve as the next Editor-in-Chief of the Award Winning, A&T Register, the student newspaper of N.C. A&T since 1893. Mullins is not a stranger to the newspaper, as he has been actively contributing to the success and production of the newspaper since his first day on campus as a freshman.

"I still remember receiving my first assignment," Mullins said. "I was supposed to write a story about a forum discussing the 'N' word in the culture of African Americans. I couldn't believe it when I saw it run as the front page story that next week." That same story was the first of Mullins' to be picked up by Black College Wire, a news service for Historically Black University newspapers.

Mullins, 21, most recently served as Editor-in-Chief for The Ayantee, the A&T yearbook. He managed to successfully put out not only two yearbooks while he was editor-in-chief, but also an additional yearbook from 2006, before he was even enrolled as a student. He is currently in the process of transitioning from the Yearbook office to the newsroom, while finishing up his fourth yearbook in just three years.

"It was very important to me that we (the yearbook staff) get the Universities history documented accurately and that we got caught up with the current year," Mullins said. "I also refused to be the Editor who fixed things and then let them get out of hand again, which is why I am working to finish up my last book before I turn the office over to the new editor, Sherelle Burton."

Mullins, a native of Sacramento, Calif. concurrently served as yearbook editor this year while also serving as Assistant Managing Editor, and Online Editor of the Register this past year. He looks forward to starting the 2009-2010 school year at the top seat of the publication.

"If you would have told me I would become Editor of the paper when I first got here, I would never have believed it," Mullins said. "Now, it's really happening, and I can't wait to start off."
