A&T'S UPCOMING JAZZ CONCERT FEATURES MARSALIS BROTHER
Delfeayo Marsalis

Delfeayo Marsalis, younger brother of Winton and Branford Marsalis of the famous Marsalis jazz family, will appear at the North Carolina A&T State University Jazz Ensemble Concert, Thursday, April 16, at 7 p.m. in Harrison Auditorium.

Delfeayo is a gifted trombonist whom critics have termed "the most original modern voice of his generation", and is prolific and better known for his work as a producer of acoustic jazz recordings.

Along with current "Tonight Show" engineer Patrick Smith, Delfeayo coined a phrase that was primarily responsible for the shift in jazz recordings from rock and roll production to the resurgence of acoustic recording. "To obtain more wood sound from the bass, this album recorded without usage of the dreaded bass direct" first appeared on brother Branford's Renaissance (Columbia, 1986), and became the single sentence to define the recorded quality of many acoustic jazz recordings since the late '80s. He is a graduate of Berklee College of Music. Jazz Ensemble Director and A&T music professor Mondre Moffett, a long-time friend of the Marsalis family, said this event will honor the late trombonist J.J. Johnson. Johnson who is called the Fastest Trombone Player Alive, made an indelible mark on the history of jazz when, with the help of Dizzy Gillespie, he reconfigured trombone playing for the be-bop era, playing linear progressions, minimizing vibrato, and producing a lucid, controlled, and clean sound.
