A&T TO SPONSOR RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM

The Department of Biology at North Carolina A&T State University is sponsoring the 11th Life and Physical Sciences Research Symposium on Friday, Feb. 13, in the Memorial Union – Stallings Ballroom. The symposium will feature the Nobel Laureate, Dr. Oliver Smithies. The theme for this year’s symposium is "Explore, Discover, Become: The Next Generation of Nobel Laureates".

Smithies is a British-born American geneticist credited with the invention of gel electrophoresis in 1955, and the simultaneous discovery, with Mario Capecchi, of the technique of homologous recombination of transgenic DNA with genomic DNA, a much more reliable method of altering animal genomes than previously used and the technique behind gene targeting and knockout mice.

Registration for the symposium and abstract information are online at http://cas.ncat.edu/registration. Abstracts are due on January 16. Faculty, undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit abstracts. The registration fee is $25.00 per person and includes the continental breakfast and lunch. Group discount rates are also available. There is no charge for students enrolled at North Carolina A&T State University. To help offset the cost for the symposium, we invite faculty, staff, and others, in addition to paying the registration fee, to consider becoming a patron.
