![]() Geneva Lax, a rising senior at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, was selected to participate in an internship at Black Entertainment Television (BET) this summer, sponsored by CosmoGirl Magazine and its Project 2024 program. Lax, a mass communications major, minoring in Electronic Media Journalism, worked on a project focused on "Youth in Politics." She was selected from more than 3,000 applicants through an essay competition and phone interview by a BET producer. Her internship at BET, which ran June 1 - July 25, was located in New York City. "I feel that this internship is the highlight of my life thus far and I thank God for allowing me an opportunity such as this. I have learned so much from actually working in my field on the national TV level and the staff at BET and CosmoGirl have been absolutely wonderful, especially Tara Roberts, the coordinator of the internship program. Highlights of my internship (were), meeting and talking to Madame Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, the first female Speaker of the House (photo shoot will appear in the December 2008 edition of Cosmogirl magazine), tour of congress (in session) behind the scenes, working with the BET awards, Pre and post production assignments, elements, various specials and working with BET's new movement YOU(th) VOTE!" "I must also say that attending A&T helped to prepare me for this internship, because I knew quite a lot of the technical terms and the general flow of broadcasting. I thank my broadcasting classes and the word "nat sound." In addition to the educational benefits I received from A&T, I can not overlook what I received by attending an HBCU. I truly believe in HBCU’s for the support and what I call the "African-American can do spirit", which you receive from a HBCU. My viewpoint on HBCU’s and why I attended one will appear in a sidebar article in either the August or September issue of CosmoGirl," added Lax.
