GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University's Department of Speech and Communication honored the 23 members of its December 2002 graduating class with a luncheon Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the Stallings Ballroom of the Memorial Student Union.
This was the first such event to recognize December graduates, joining the department’s annual Senior Luncheon and Awards Ceremony held each spring.

The keynote speaker was Delia L. Johnson, director, Office of Civil Rights, Broadcasting Board of Governors/International Broadcasting Bureau. She spoke about the history of the bureau, best known for the Voice of America service which for 60 years has broadcast news and information about American democracy to people living under authoritarian rule.

She told graduates that the skills they have developed in speech, interpersonal communication and journalism could help reach people around the world.

She was joined by Janice Albritton-Pollo, human resources specialist for the Office of Personnel, Broadcasting Board of Governors/International Broadcasting Bureau, who discussed internship opportunities with the federal agency.

Honor graduates and top students were recognized, including top GPA achiever Kevin Hicks in Broadcast Production, Bervette Carree in Broadcast News, Malcolm E. Brooks in Public Relations and Ashley N. Matthews in Speech Pathology/Audiology.

Dr. Teresa Styles, chair of the department, brought closing remarks.
