N.C. - North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University's
Department of Speech and Communication honored the 23 members of its
December 2002 graduating class with a luncheon Tuesday, Nov. 19, in
the Stallings Ballroom of the Memorial Student Union.
This was the first such event to recognize December graduates, joining
the department’s annual Senior Luncheon and Awards Ceremony held each
spring.
The keynote speaker was Delia L. Johnson, director, Office of Civil
Rights, Broadcasting Board of Governors/International Broadcasting
Bureau. She spoke about the history of the bureau, best known for
the Voice of America service which for 60 years has broadcast news
and information about American democracy to people living under authoritarian
rule.
She told graduates that the skills they have developed in speech,
interpersonal communication and journalism could help reach people
around the world.
She was joined by Janice Albritton-Pollo, human resources specialist
for the Office of Personnel, Broadcasting Board of Governors/International
Broadcasting Bureau, who discussed internship opportunities with the
federal agency.
Honor graduates and top students were recognized, including top GPA
achiever Kevin Hicks in Broadcast Production, Bervette Carree in Broadcast
News, Malcolm E. Brooks in Public Relations and Ashley N. Matthews
in Speech Pathology/Audiology.
Dr. Teresa Styles, chair of the department, brought closing remarks.
