GREENSBORO, N.C. - - North
Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University's Department
of Speech and Communication was featured in the December edition of
Presstime, the magazine of the Newspaper Association of America.
The article, which features several photographs of N.C. A&T communication
students and administrators, focuses on the innovative collaboration
between A&T and the News & Record.
In the feature, Dr. Teresa Styles, chair of A&T's speech and communication
department shares how the partnership was formed and ways in which
it has enhanced A&T's student newspaper, The A&T Register.
The paper has gone from being published once a semester to weekly.
According to Styles, the student newspaper has been enhanced with
the assistance of the newspaper advisor, Val Neiman, assistant city/state
editor for the News & Record. Neiman teaches a one-hour writing
course and evaluates the students' stories before they are published.
"This collaboration has enhanced the students' ability to apply
for internships with outstanding news media such as Landmark Communications,
which owns the News & Record and the NewYork Times regional papers,"
said Styles. "Our partnership could serve as a model for other
universities that need enhancement with their newspapers."
