Davis Invited to Visit United Nations Headquarters
Greensboro, N.C. - Dr. Robert Davis,
professor of sociology at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State
University, has
been invited to the United Nations by its Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Davis
will visit the United Nations Headquarters in New
York Oct. 8.
The secretary-general has invited Davis and other
African American leaders of civil society to participate in a program that will
discuss ways in which African Americans can contribute to the work of the United
Nations, and help promote a better
understanding of its role among the American public.
Participants in the program will be briefed on
several topics including an overview of the work of the United Nations, the
United Nations in Africa, the Millennium Development Goals, the Global Compact,
and the role of civil society. They will attend a
luncheon hosted by the secretary-general and given a tour of the headquarters.
The program is being organized by the Department
of Public Information, with the support of the Better World Fund and The
People Program. Assisting the United Nations in this endeavor are Ambassador
Robin Chandler Duke and the co-directors of
the People Program, Edward Palmer, Senior Fellow at the University of Illinois’
Institute of Government and Public Affairs, and
Dr. Alice Palmer, special assistant to the executive director of University
Relations at the University of Illinois.
