Three A&T Army ROTC Cadets Awarded National Scholarships

GREENSBORO - Three cadets from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University were awarded scholarships from The ROCK Inc., during the 29th Annual Spring Gala and Awards Banquet held at the Andrew Air Force Base Officer’s Mess April 12.

Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Bryon M. Adkins, Jr., a senior engineering major was awarded the only senior scholarship during a four-day tour in Washington, D.C. April 10-13. The ROCKS Scholarship is presented to the most outstanding Army ROTC Cadet at each grade level among the Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Adkins is a 4-year Army ROTC Scholarship recipient from Ruthville, Va., where his parents Byron and Bernice Adkins currently reside. He currently volunteers for the NAACP, Red Cross, and the 4-H Club. He is also a member of the A&T Army Color Guard and the ROTC Ranger Challenge Team. Upon completion of his degree and the Army ROTC Program this May, he will receive a commission as an Army 2nd Lieutenant. Adkins also won as a sophomore in nationwide competition two years ago.
ROCKS Scholarship Award Winners


Receiving one of two scholarships for juniors was Cadet Sergeant Marcus T. McNeill. McNeill, the son of Dwight W. and Sharon S. McNeill, is a native of Lillington, N.C. McNeill graduated from Western Harnett High School in 2000. Having decided to attend college, McNeill applied for the U.S. Army ROTC Scholarship. Subsequently, he received a 4-year scholarship from A&T. Currently a second semester junior, pursuing a B.S. degree in business marketing, his overall cumulative GPA is 2.87 and 4.0 in military science. He has participated extensively in diverse programs throughout high school and at the university. He currently volunteers for the South River Electric Membership Corporation. He is also a member of the A&T ROTC Ranger Challenge Team and Color Guard.

Also receiving one of two scholarships for sophomores was Cadet Margo K. White, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Meyerhofer of Kingston, OK. White attended Blooming Prairie High School in Minnesota and graduated in 1998. After graduation, she enlisted in the United States Army and served on active duty for three years as a medical specialist. White completed
Basic Training at Fort Jackson, S.C., and Advance Individual Training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. After receiving her initial training, she served with C Co, 703 Main Support Battalion at Fort Stewart, Ga. While on active duty, she earned a 4-year Green-to-Gold Scholarship, which enabled her to attend college. She is currently a nursing major at A&T. Her overall cumulative GPA in nursing is 3.98 and 4.0 in military science. White is also a member of the A&T ROTC Ranger Challenge Team. She is married to Robert White and they have one son, Zack.

The ROCKS Scholarship is named for Brigadier General (Retired) Roscoe C. ‘ROCK’ Cartwright. General Cartwright was the first black Field Artilleryman promoted to Brigadier General.
Membership in The ROCKS is open to active, reserve, retired, and former officers of the Armed Forces established with the explicit purpose of contributing “to strengthening the Army’s officer Corps professionalism and to build a stronger, culturally diverse force.”
