Monroe Receives Lifetime Achievement in Academia Award

GREENSBORO -Dr. Joseph Monroe, dean of the College of Engineering at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, was recently awarded the 2003 Lifetime Achievement in Academia Award by the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) National Executive Board and the 2003 Golden Torch Awards Selection Committee.
Monroe received the award at the 6th Annual Golden Torch Awards Ceremony in Anaheim, California. The awards ceremony is the premier award and recognition program for African American engineers, scientists and technologists. The primary goal of the awards is to recognize excellence

among African American technical professionals, corporate, government and academic leaders, university and pre-college students.
Monroe received his award based on his extensive experience and outstanding achievements in the engineering field.

A retired Air Force full colonel, Monroe received his B.S. degree in engineering mathematics from N.C. A&T and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University. He served on the faculty at the United States Air Force Academy for 18 years, where he ascended the
academic rank from instructor to full professor and the military ranks from captain to full colonel.

Monroe was the first African American to be named a permanent professor at a United States Service Academy. He also was the first African American to receive a Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science.

Monroe is a member of the Board of Directors for the Industries of the Blind, the Board of Directors for Computing for NASA and the Board for Engineering and Surveying for North Carolina.
