N.C. Board of Governors Honors N.C. A&T Professor with Excellence in Teaching Award

Dr. Lisa Owens-Jackson

Greensboro, N.C. – (March 21, 2017) – The University of North Carolina Board of Governors has selected Dr. Lisa Owens-Jackson to receive the 2017 Excellence in Teaching Award for North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

Owens-Jackson is the associate dean of the College of Business and Economics (COBE), associate professor in the Department of Accounting and Finance and leads the Assessment of Learning Process. She is noted for having a distinct passion for accounting education research, examining the impact of diversity on accounting education and the accounting profession.

Having been nominated by a special N.C. A&T campus committee and selected by the Board of Governors’ committee on Personnel and Tenure, Owens-Jackson joins a class of 16 other recipients representing all 16 of North Carolina’s public universities and the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.

“This is a once in a lifetime honor and it is very significant to me,” said Owens-Jackson. “Many of my mentors have received this award in the past. I see it as part of their legacy.  It means a great deal to be recognized for doing something you love. There’s no other feeling like it.”

Specializing in the use of financial and managerial accounting information for decision-making and measurement of organizational success, Owens-Jackson says she has a personal mission for her students and that’s to prepare them “to succeed in a competitive, technology-driven, ever-changing, global environment.”

Owens-Jackson says her deep investment in students was inspired in part by the words of N.C. A&T Business Dean Emeritus Quiester Craig: “Students don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” She acknowledges students’ diverse backgrounds and talents, approaches each one with respect and gives constructive evaluations that support growth and development.

“The most important aspect for me is to have an impact on the success of my students. If students can achieve their goals they can change the world," she says.

Her students are quick to laud her passion and attribute their success to her dedication. One of her students commented, “There was never a time I left the class not knowing because she always made sure you understood and gave excellent examples.”

Among many other awards and honors, Owens-Jackson was recognized in 2016 as the Academic Advisor of the Year by the COBE and the Beta Alpha Psi National Meeting. She has presented her research at the European Accounting Association, the American Accounting Association, the Institute of Management Accountants, the LEAN Accounting Summit and other conferences.

She earned a B.S. from N.C. A&T, an M.A. from The Ohio State University and a Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University. Each degree is in Accounting.

Each of the Excellence in Teaching awardees will receive a commemorative bronze medallion and a $12,500 cash prize. A Board of Governors member will present awards during each campus’ spring commencement ceremony.
