N.C. A&T DIVISION OF BUSINESS AND FINANCE ‘CELEBRATE THE CHILDREN’ WITH HOLIDAY SERVICE PROJECT

This holiday season North Carolina A&T State University Division of Business and Finance partnered with the Children’s Services Division of Guilford County Department of Health and Human Services and adopted 225 foster children to receive gifts.

Business and Finance members befittingly coined the holiday effort “Celebrate the Children.” The project provided the perfect opportunity to give to those in need, as well as continue the university’s year-long commitment to fulfilling 125 service projects in honor of the 125th school anniversary.

On Dec. 10, Aggie Shuttles, packed with gifts of every type, left the Dowdy Building on A&T’s campus bound for Guilford County Health and Human Services.

“People are so excited. There’s nothing like helping children at this time of the year and there’s nothing like giving back and helping those who are less fortunate,” said Angela Peterson, associate vice chancellor for Campus Enterprises and chairwoman of the service projects committee for the Division of Business and Finance.

The division was initially given a card for each child with three wish list items. Multiply three times 225 and the result was a massive undertaking for the group; and a welcome blessing for Children’s Services.

Peterson says her contact with Children’s Services was “speechless.”

“She said this has never, ever happened before. They always struggle to make it happen for the kids. She continued to ask, ‘Are you serious?’ ‘Are you sure you will be able to do this? She was actually teary-eyed from the excitement,” said Peterson. “She said an angel must have led me on the day that I called because they had just met as a group in their department trying to figure out what they would do this year because each year trying to provide gifts for the children gets harder and harder and they don’t have sponsors and they don’t receive funding.”

“Celebrate the Children” received overwhelming support and success across the entire division. Peterson says the excitement was evident immediately from the introduction of the project and throughout. The promise was made and Business and Finance was determined to fulfill its obligation. When individuals couldn’t cover the cost of all three items, several banded together for one child.

In addition to the dedicated staff within Business and Finance, Peterson said on-site services provider, SODEXO, local ministry, Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Greensboro, Inc. and food vendor, Sweet Cold Treats donated to make sure each child received every item on their wish list.

The Division of Business and Finance consists of the Office of Budget and Planning, Campus Enterprises, the Office of the Comptroller, the Office of Facilities, the Purchasing office and the University Police Department.

The university’s 125th Anniversary commitment to participating in 125 service projects is a direct result of the university’s core values of learning, excellence, integrity, respect, creativity, engagement and service in action.
