A&T SENIOR RECEIVES AWARDS FROM SOCIETY OF PROFESSIONAL JOURNALISTS

North Carolina A&T State University graduating senior Kenneth L. Hawkins has received two awards for photography from the Society of Professional Journalists.

In the March 31 Region 2 meeting of the journalism organization at Elon University, Hawkins won second place for feature photography at a 4-year college or university for his photo package, “Old-Fashioned a la Mode,” that appeared in the NABJ Monitor.

He also received third place for general news photography at a 4-year college or university for his stand alone photo, “iStan,” that appeared in the St. Petersburg Times during his internship.

Hawkins is an Atlanta native, who has served as the photo editor of the campus newspaper, “The A&T Register.” He has also been an intern with the New York Times Journalism Institute, the National Association of Black Journalists Student Multimedia Projects, the News & Record and the St. Petersburg Times.

He has been named a 2012 Pulliam Fellow and will begin work as a photographer for the Indianapolis Star on May 27.
