Joint School of Nanoscience & Nanoengineering
The Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (JSNN), is an academic collaboration between North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State Universtity (NC A&T) and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). Located on the South Campus of Gateway University Research Park, JSNN builds on the strengths of the universities to oﬀer innovative, cross-disciplinary graduate programs in the emerging areas of nanoscience and nanoengineering.
JSNN oﬀers four degree programs, a Professional Science Master’s (PSM) in Nanoscience, a Ph.D. in Nanoscience, an M.S. in Nanoengineering and a Ph.D. in Nanoengineering. Distance learning options are also in development.
JSNN has six research focus areas:
- Nanobiology uses engineered nanomaterials to enable diagnosis, imaging and therapy.
- Nanometrology is developing fundamental understanding of materials through characterization of nanoscale phenomena and investigating them for novel applications.
- Nanomaterials (with a special emphasis on Nanocomposite materials), focuses on synthesis, processing, manufacturing, and characterization of nanostructure.
- Nanobioelectronics, leverages nanoelectronics techniques in new functional application areas beyond CMOS technology exploring a range of emerging technologies, from personal medical diagnostics to bio-signal propagation and optoelectronics.
- Nanoenergy research theme explores leading edge knowledge gaps associated with energy harvesting, scavenging, and storage.
- Computational Nanotechnology modeling and simulation of devices, structures, and systems, including composite materials, computational biology, and materials modeling.
These technical areas aﬀord numerous opportunities for collaboration with industrial partners.
JSNN is a $56.3 million, 105,000 square foot state-of -the-art science and engineering research building with nanoelectronics and nanobio clean rooms, nanoengineering and nanoscience laboratories and extensive materials analysis facilities. JSNN’s characterization capability includes a suite of microscopes from Carl Zeiss SMT®, including the only Orion Helium Ion microscope in the southeast. Also a visualization center allows three-dimension imaging for modeling of nanotechnology problems.
JSNN collaborates with Guilford Technical Community College and Forsyth Technical Community College on an internship program that exposes students to the advanced technology at its facility. JSNN also is actively engaged with K-12 outreach with Guilford County Schools.

Leader in STEM Education to Deliver Inaugural Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series Talk for N.C. A&T’s College of Science and Technology
In its first Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series, the College of Science and Technology at N.C. A&T State University will present, “How to Get Students Actively Engaged in Learning, Even If You Have Hundreds of Them In Class,” at 3 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 23.
Farmers and other growers interested in learning about industrial-hemp production and the state law that has established a research program for it, are encouraged to attend an upcoming meeting.
