Text-in-Community Event to Feature Malala Fund Co-Founder:

The Text-in-Community event will kick of the fall semester, Wednesday, Sept. 17, 4 p.m. in Harrison Auditorium with guest speaker, Shiza Shahid. Named by Forbes Magazine’s “30 Under 30” for her social entrepreneurship. Shahid, 24, is the co-founder of the Malala Fund.

When Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani was shot by the Taliban in 2012, Shahid, who had met Malala in 2009, traveled to London to help oversee her care. The Stanford grad and McKinsey consultant became the 16-year-old's chief strategist and co-founded the Malala Fund to turn Malala’s vision for girls' education into reality.

I am Malala is the university’s common reading selection for this academic year. Co-written by Yousafzai and Christina Lamb, it chronicles the young woman’s traumatic experience and her continued fight for education.
