Lotus Notes FAQ's
Why should I use Lotus Notes as opposed to some other e-mail software?
The university is moving toward standardization of many applications on campus. Lotus Notes was selected as our email platform because it goes beyond traditional e-mail. You probably already know that one of the components of Lotus Notes application takes care of receiving and sending e-mail messages and other documents. Behind the Notes interface that you see is a sophisticated system for storing, managing, and transmitting information. Notes empowers groups of users by offering them a secure delivery and storage system for exchanging documents and ideas in a fast and convenient manner.
How can I access my Lotus Notes mailbox off-campus?
iNotes offers users access to their mailbox using the Web browser at the following URL http://webmail.ncat.edu or simply clicking email on the NCAT homepage. This is very handy for people who travel and need access to their e-mail, calendar and ToDo list from a computer that does not have the full Lotus Notes client installed or a public area (public library, kiosk, etc.). It is also handy for checking e-mail from your home computer (no need to install Lotus Notes).
The latest version of iNotes offers three modes:
1. Full Mode - uses Microsoft ActiveX technology, provides full set of features similar to Lotus Notes. Requires high speed Internet connection.
2. Lite Mode - provides a subset of features (e-mail, basic calendar features, contacts), recommended for slower Internet connection and/or older computers.
3. UltraLite Mode - available only on Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch in Safari browser, and Mozilla Firefox browser on a PC.
Do I have to remove Outlook from my computer?
No, you do not have to remove Outlook from your computer. You can continue to view the email currently on your machine; however, once you are migrated to Lotus Notes 8.5.x, all incoming and outbound mail will then be received and sent through the Lotus Notes platform.
When do I need to migrate to Lotus Notes 8.5.x?
The technical support teams on campus are contacting our pilot group first. A schedule will be created for more users to be added as we transition. We are also developing instructions for individuals that might want to load their own software.
