Recognizing the ECU-NCAT National Learning Institute Dental Pipeline

East Carolina University has been selected to successfully implement a yearlong recruitment and retention campaign through the Dental Pipeline National Learning Institute (NLI). Partnering with North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, the ECU School of Dental Medicine was chosen along with 10 other dental schools to support the NLI’s ultimate goal of creating a diverse workforce of dentists who understand the oral healthcare needs of patients from underserved populations. The ECU SoDM, NC A&T, the Old North State Dental Society (ONSDS), and North Carolina historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) will collaborate to implement the project, focusing on the recruitment and retention of underrepresented minority (URM) dental students in North Carolina.  This project builds on ECU’s commitment to meeting health needs of diverse and underserved communities, and on NC A&T’s track record of educating URM students who are prepared to assume leadership roles in their professions and communities. Preparing Tomorrow's Dentists Summer Program

Sponsored by The ECU-NCAT Dental Pipeline

The East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine (SoDM), North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University's Pre-Professional Scholars Program, the Old North State Dental Society, and North Carolina historically black colleges and universities are working together to develop activities to enhance students awareness of the dental profession, and to ultimately increase the number of underrepresented minority students who pursue a career in dentistry in North Carolina. The ECU SoDM Preparing Tomorrow's Dentists Summer Program is a unique gateway into the dental pipeline for underrepresented students!

In October 2012, the American Dental Education Association, the premier association serving the dental education community, in partnership with the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, introduced the Dental Pipeline National Learning Institute (NLI) to continue increasing recruitment and retention among underserved student communities at 11 dental schools. This program is supported by a grant from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
