Kecia Williams Smith

Kecia Williams Smith is a deserving recipient of the 2012 Business Information Professional of the Year award based on her outstanding achievements in the accounting profession and her community. As a proud alumna of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s accounting program, she has represented the university well. She has contributed greatly to the accounting profession in two of the most dynamic areas and now she is attending the PhD program at Texas A&M University in College Statetion.

Mrs. Smith-Williams has proven herself to be a bona fide leader by climbing the corporate ranks to the position of senior manager in the public accounting firm, Deloitte, in the Atlanta office. Then as Associate Director for the Inspections Division at the PCAOB Atlanta regional office, she was an inspiration for the young generations to venture out in different avenues, not just public accounting. Kecia is an active member of many professional organizations that complete her persona as an overall great business professional. She is a member of the AICPA and the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants (GSCPA). As a member of the GSCPA, she is the incoming chair of the Minority Issues Tasks Force. During her many years of membership in the GSCPA, she was the former director of the Educational Foundation and chaired the Student Outreach Committee. In this role, the C.P.A. (Cash for Professional Awareness) Initiative benefiting 14 educational institutions and distributing approximately $15,000 in funding was successfully created in the spring of 2004. In addition to that, she is an active member of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), an organization that she has held membership in since her undergraduate years. She has participated in the 2007 and 2008 NABA CPA Examination Summit to discuss issues related to minorities and the CPA certification. As NABA’s theme states, “Lift As We Climb,” Kecia is a strong advocate of encouraging students to pursue their CPA license as soon as possible.

Because of Kecia’s dedicated involvement in the community and through her quality work performance, several organizations have honored her for her outstanding commitment. In 2004, she was included in the Who’s Who of Atlanta, which celebrates the achievements of notable African-Americans in the Atlanta area. The national office of NABA presented Kecia with the Rising Star award in 2005. The Rising Star award recognizes a current lifetime NABA member who has accomplished a significant professional or community project, and holds a prominent position within their organization.

In the fall of 2008, Kecia gave back to her university through presenting on the emerging topic of International Financial Reporting Standards Board (IFRS). Her presentation to a crowded auditorium informed students on the impact that IFRS would have on their careers. For this year’s Beta Alpha Psi spring induction banquet, Kecia served as the keynote speaker for the ceremony where she gave an outstanding, encouraging message regarding our theme, “Success beyond Measure: What’s Your Ruler?”  Kecia is constantly serving as a mentor and is very supportive of the Beta Alpha Psi chapter that she has been a member of since her undergraduate years. In February 2009, she was chosen to be a symposium speaker at the University of Memphis Law Review’s Financial Services Reform. Last year, Kecia served as a speaker at the AICPA Accounting Leadership Workshop. For the three consecutive years (2001-2003), Kecia was a technical session speaker at the NABA National Convention.

In the future, Kecia does not want to stop working at the PCAOB, but further continue her educational studies and possibly obtain her doctorate degree in accounting and teach at a university. She has a willingness to help others succeed. The Zeta Sigma chapter proudly nominates Kecia Williams Smith for the prestigious Business Information Professional of the Year because she not only embodies the qualities of a business leader, but those of a person with great character.
