The Vision of the Department of Leadership Studies and Adult Education (LSAD):

The Department of Leadership Studies and Adult Education will become a recognized international leader in the advancement of leadership and adult education research and practice while preparing transformative global leaders and adult education practitioners to foster scholarly engagement.  

The Mission of the Department of Leadership Studies and Adult Education (LSAD): 

The mission of the Department of Leadership Studies and Adult Education is to prepare professionals from diverse educational backgrounds, training, and experiences to become global leaders and adult education practitioners.  

Overview of the Department:

The Department of Leadership Studies and Adult Education is a department where professionals from diverse educational backgrounds, training, and experiences are trained to become global leaders. The master’s degree in Adult Education program is designed to prepare professional to become leaders for adult learners in organizations, higher education institutions, just to name a few. The doctoral degree in leadership studies program is an interdisciplinary degree designed to prepare professionals to become leaders and scholars in leadership studies.

The department is proud to have programs that are highly ranked with distinguished faculty. The Adult Education program was ranked #13 as an Adult Education Program in the nation by Graduateprograms.com and the Leadership Studies program was ranked third out of ten Top Graduate Programs at North Carolina A & T State University based on a 6-year total enrollment.  Students and faculty are active members of professional organizations and present at various local, state, national, and international academic conferences that include American Education Research Association (AERA), American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE), Adult Education Research Conference (AERC), Adult Higher Education Alliance (AHEA), Association for Leadership Educators (ALE), International Leadership Association (ILA), North Carolina Association for Research in Education (NCARE), North Carolina Adult Education Association (NCAEA) and others.

The graduates from the department are employed in leadership positions at different organizations in higher educational institutions, health organizations, business and industries, non-profit organizations, just to name a few.  For example, the President of St. Augustine University in Raleigh, NC, is a graduate from the department.

Program Outcomes

• Goal 1:  Intellectual Climate - The Ph.D. program in Leadership Studies will contribute to intellectual climate through the utilization of community networks to enhance current day, real-time academic, economic, political, and social justice issues by bringing eminent leaders to campus to participate in discussions and community forums.  We will also intentionally connect and involve students in community-based initiatives that reiterate scholarship and engagement.

• Goal 2:  Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Engagement - The Ph.D. program in Leadership Studies will achieve excellence and recognition for high quality in teaching and learning, research, creative exchange, civic and community engagement.  We will produce leader-scholars who are critical thinkers and facilitators of leadership committed to civic and community engagement, transformative research, creative scholarship, and multicultural explorations.

• Goal 3: Resource Generation - The Ph.D. program in Leadership Studies recognizes that generating resources is critical to the stimulation of innovative scholarship, meaningful outreach and engagement, global impact and creative exchange.  In order to build capacity for sustainability, we will strategically strengthen relationships with current students and alumni as well as expand partnerships with foundations, agencies, businesses, and corporations. 

• Goal 4: Institutional Effectiveness - The Ph.D. program in Leadership Studies will create an environment that is accessible and welcoming to students, staff, faculty, alumni, and the greater community.  We will utilize best practices and technological enhancements to advance program effectiveness and efficiency.
