Prospectus/Preliminary Oral Examination

The Preliminary Defense/Prospectus is conducted by the student's dissertation committee and is a defense of the student’s dissertation proposal. The purpose of the prospectus is to formalize an understanding between the student and the dissertation committee regarding the scholarship of a proposed dissertation project and to certify their collective willingness to collaborate in seeing the dissertation project to a successful completion. Students are allowed to defend their prospectus twice. After two unsuccessful attempts, the student must meet with the Program Coordinator and Dissertation Committee for remediation procedures which may include dismissal from the program.
