Theatre Arts Program
The Theatre Arts Program, accredited since 1988 by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST), offers the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Professional Theatre, with areas of concentration in Acting and Theatre Technology. The Acting Curriculum is an extensive program that includes multiple courses in Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Acting, Acting Styles, Singing for the Actor, and Acting for the Camera. Students study character development, text analysis, audition preparation, classical acting, voice and movement. These students realize their training on main stage and in studio productions that also help them gain experiences in directing, management and dramaturgy.
The NC A&T State University Music Program has been fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) since 1991. We offer three degree programs for students wishing to pursue a career in music:
The Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education
Students pursuing this degree program must choose either a choral or instrumental concentration. The degree is tailored toward those wishing to teach music in the public schools (K - 12th grade).
The Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Performance
This degree is for those students wishing to pursue a career as a professional performing musician. Advanced musical knowledge and inherent musical talent are prerequisites for successfully pursuing this degree program. Many music performance majors plan to continue their musical studies in graduate school.
The Bachelor of Arts degree in General Music
For those students not wishing to pursue a career in music performance or education, we offer the General Music degree program, which allows the student to specialize in Electronic Music.
Our low student-teacher ratio ensures individual attention, and our faculty have studied with some of the world's finest musicians at leading colleges and universities. We emphasize career development and can place our graduates in competitive graduate schools or assist them in professional careers.
Students who elect to major in the visual arts must have a desire to develop skills necessary for achieving as an artists. It is recommended that students have taken high school courses in art or have had other art instruction. The visual arts major consists of courses from foundation to advanced levels in art media and techniques. Majors are expected to begin developing their portfolios as freshmen and to have accumulated a substantial body of work by their senior year. Students are expected to demonstrate growth and development consistent with courses taken in drawing, painting, design and aesthetics as they work towards graduation.
The Dance Concentration is part of the Liberal Studies curriculum but also is an essential part of Visual and Performing Arts. The major is comprised of 24 credits in dance including Study Abroad and Senior Project. The major is an intense study of both technical skill and scholarship. Majors are expected to audition for acceptance to the program and auditions are held at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.
Our Study Abroad program requires all majors and minors to travel to an African or Caribbean Country for one month. Students are required to actively participate in the company to travel, have a passport and be financially responsible for a portion of their expenses.
