Sky Bennett achieved his Bachelor of Arts degree at UNC Chapel Hill, whereupon he returned to his home state to earn a JD from the University of Georgia School of Law. In the last year of law school, he came in contact with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, through which he was introduced to the Royal University of Bhutan's Gaeddu College of Business Studies. After a year of preparation in Belgium, he went on to teach two years of Legal Foundations, including contract and constitutional law, civil procedure, and corporate law, as well as classes in Tax Law and Intellectual Property Law, developing the latter as a new course.

Teaching in such an environment, where even basic amenities could not be taken for granted, helped develop his focus on making real connection with students, the need for skills in logical thinking and critical analysis, and the importance of perspective. He ultimately decided to return to North Carolina to continue his teaching career while maintaining an international perspective. Outside the classroom, he enjoys playing guitar and riding motorcycles, but not usually at the same time.
