NCA&T STUDENTS, FACULTY, STAFF JOIN TOGETHER TO COLLECT
DONATIONS FOR HAITIAN RELIEF EFFORT GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina A&T State University students, faculty and staff have joined together to plan and execute a coordinated relief effort for the victims of last week's devastating earthquake in Haiti. Beginning Wednesday, Jan. 20, the university will collect donated items that will include clothing (summer wear, including shoes and flip flops), canned food, bottled water and nonperishable personal items. Public collection sites are the Memorial Student Union, Williams Cafeteria, McNair and Murphy halls. Items from these sites will be collected daily and delivered to the Aggie Trailer, located in the Aggie Stadium parking lot. A&T and community members will be able to drop off items directly at the stadium between the hours of 3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. The university will also accept donated items at the remaining basketball games at Corbett Sports Center. The university will partner with local agencies to coordinate the delivery of these donated items to Haiti.A&T 's Project Haiti campus coordinator Ryan Maltese is working closely with SGA President Syene Jasmin whose family is Haitian. "Many of our students want to contribute to this cause and I think Project Haiti is a perfect example of how we can work together and collaborate effectively," said Jasmin. These efforts are being dubbed the first phase of coordinated efforts. Student organizations are busy identifying other ways they can assist and galvanize additional support. "One of the major things we can start doing is educating our students on the Haitian situation which is much deeper than an earthquake. This is a result of poverty, and social and political upheaval that has been going on for quite some time," said Jasmin. "We are very grateful to have the opportunity to work with our students and coordinate this humanitarian effort," said Maltese. "We look forward to continuing these efforts in helping the citizens of Haiti . For ways to contribute to A&T's Project Haiti relief efforts, call Ryan Maltese at 336.256.2058. |
