North Carolina A&T - New Media Center Campus

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has been recognized as a world leader in its innovative approaches to the use of technology by the New Media Consortium (NMC). In early 2003, in recognition of the tenth anniversary of the organization, the NMC's Board of Directors commissioned its fourth worldwide search for proven leaders among higher education institutions in the application of technology to teaching, learning, research, or creative expression.

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University was among 50 colleges and universities worldwide identified in that search. Each was recognized as a New Media Center for their demonstrated commitment to pushing the boundaries of teaching, learning, research or creative expression, and adept in the application of technology. The 2003 honorees join 125 prestigious colleges, universities and museums who have received the designation of New Media Center over the 10-year history of the organization. Selection to be part of this elite group is considered a mark of excellence, and higher education institutions of all types are included among those who have been so recognized.

The selection process is competitive and applications are ranked in a criteria-based system of peer review. Dr. Larry Johnson, president and CEO of the NMC, noted, "The selection process was very competitive - we received the largest number of applications in our history, and the overall quality of those applications was just extraordinary. Taken as a whole, the results show the state of technology integration in colleges and universities is at a remarkably high level."

"Even among a very strong field, it was quite clear that North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is a place where smart, creative people are devising innovative solutions to challenges we all face in teaching and learning," Johnson continued. "The dedication to excellence here is palpable, and students and faculty are the clear beneficiaries. This recognition is well deserved."

In addition to the honor of the designation itself, institutions selected as New Media Centers become part of the vibrant community of innovators that is the NMC, working with colleagues across the world to help set the agenda for technology in higher education.

NMC members include highly regarded private universities like MIT, Princeton, and Yale; leading state research universities like UCLA, Texas, and Michigan; outstanding liberal colleges like Mount Holyoke, Carleton and the University of Richmond; top community colleges like Moraine Valley, Maricopa, and San Diego; and a growing list of innovative museums such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
