A&T's Monique Johnson was Featured on CBS Evening News, Assignment America

CBS Evening News with Katie Couric viewers who viewed "Assignment America" on August 31 heard Monique Johnson's story.

By popular demand, Johnson, a student at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, received the most votes the previous weekend, allowing her personal story about perseverance and her quest to raise money to help pay for her college expenses to be told. "Assignment America" with correspondent Steve Hartman lets viewers decide what stories will be featured. Every week, Hartman reveals three story pitches. Viewers then log on to CBSNews.com to vote for their favorite. Hartman takes the winning pitch and turns it into a story for the following Friday's show.

Hartman and his crew joined Johnson on campus on August 27 and 28 to interview her and capture her on camera.

Johnson, a junior and honors student majoring in business administration, recently appeared in a local story on WFMY-TV and in an article published by The Winston-Salem Chronicle. The touching story told of Johnsons' physical disability and the fund-raiser she had planned to raise money to continue paying for her education and a full-time aide.

She was born with Dyastrophic Dysplasia dwarfism - a physical disorder which hinders her ability to walk. She uses a specialized scooter for mobility. Against all odds, Johnson honed her talent as an artist and has been selling her artwork throughout the community to help raise money to pay for an aide who must assist her daily while living on campus.
