Welcome to the ABSN Option

Description of the Accelerated BSN (ABSN) Entry Option                                                           

The Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) Entry Option is designed for second degree students who are high-level achievers and desire to pursue a career as a professional registered nurse.  The ABSN Entry Option curriculum is delivered in block format over 12 months (January to December). The course work is very intense and rigorous.  There are 15 required nursing courses.  These courses can be completed in 12 months of full time study.  Students should plan to commit an average of 24-32 contact hours per week for class, clinical and laboratory courses. This entry option is designed for full-time study Monday through Friday and may also include nights and weekends. Therefore, it is expected that students do not work during this year of study and preparation for the NCLEX-RN, the licensing exam for registered nurses.

Plan of Study and Degree Requirements

The second degree student enrolled in the ABSN Entry option requires 56 semester hours for graduation with completion of 27 hours of prerequisite courses prior to admission to the option. Prerequisite courses may be taken through any accredited community college, college, or university. It is advised that students contact the Admissions office at NC A & T State University before taking a course to confirm equivalency of the course.

There are 15 required nursing courses.  These courses can be completed in 12 months of full time study.  Students should plan to commit an average of 24-32 hours per week in direct course time particularly in the clinical or laboratory courses.

Minimal Admission Criteria

Admission is a very competitive process and dependent on the pool of applicants.

  • Bachelor’s Degree from  an accredited college or university  with a graduating cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Course pre-requisites completed with “C” or better before enrollment
  • TEAS Test score  at or above the National Mean - 64.3% currently
  • Interview and essay that demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Negative Criminal Background  Check
  • Negative Drug Screening

Admission Process

Prospective students should submit an application packet following provided instructions to the School of Nursing by June 30.

Applications will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee within the School of Nursing and after the applicant has been accepted he or she will apply for admission to North Carolina A&T State University for enrollment in the spring semester. 


Admission process for 2014 cohort will begin January 2013.

Information Sessions will be held in the fall and spring semesters.
