About the Rehabilitation Counseling Program
The Mental Health Counseling - Rehabilitation program is a 60-hour program accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) through 2018 and is designed to prepare culturally competent counselors who specialize in working with persons with physical, developmental, cognitive, psychological, and neurological disabilities and/or illnesses. Rehabilitation Counseling students are equipped with knowledge, skills, and experience to empower persons with disabilities through the counseling process. Students are further equipped with unique competencies to provide effective rehabilitation counseling services within a cultural context.
Currently the program admits students in fall and spring semesters. The program currentlyhas four full time faculty members as well as adjunct rehabilitation counseling faculty to teach the CORE Accredited Curriculum. Presently, there are 117 students enrolled either on a full-time or part-time basis. Student's outcomes are evaluated on a semester basis as part of the program evaluation.
The department currently has 3 RSA grants to help support students. These grants are in the areas of Vocational Evaluation and Work Adjustment, Rehabilitation Psychology and Behavioral Medicine, and also Behavioral Addictions.
For the 2010-2011 academic year 100% of the rehabilitation counseling students passed their clinical coursework. The rehabilitation counseling students taking the departmental comps for 2010-2011 had a 100% pass rate, as well as 100% of the students taking the Certified Rehabilitation Counseling CRC exam. Recent 2010-2011 graduates are seeking licensure here in NC as well as 90% of the graduates being employed in either state or community based mental health counseling agencies.
Students in rehabilitation counseling will demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and application in:
- Theories and methods of counseling for individuals with physical or mental disabilities in and out of the work environment
- Case management and documentation requirements that meet federal and state legal guidelines
- Medical and psychosocial aspects associated with physical, developmental, and psychiatric disabilities
- Individual and Group Counseling
- Vocational Evaluations and Related Assessments
- Job Development and Placement
- The Code of Ethics for Rehabilitation Counselors
The Rehabilitation Counseling program complies with federal laws of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 507 of the Americans with Disability Act of 1990, and Section 508 of the Disability Act of 2001.

Clinical Experiences
The Rehabilitation Counseling program offers extensive field work including practicum and internship. Each student is required to successfully complete a 100 hour Practicum and a 600 hour Internship. Each student is required to obtain 40% of Direct contact hours during both experiences.
Credentials and Certifications
Students in the counseling program are eligible to apply for certification as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) and licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of North Carolina.
