Dr. Burkey earned degrees in Economics, Banking, and Mathematics at Appalachian State University. He earned an MA and Ph.D. in Economics from Duke University. Dr. Burkey specializes in economic theory and consumer behavior with a focus on the economics of location and space. His research has investigated the location of accidents, the location of liquor stores and payday lenders, and how pricing decisions are related to firm location. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Urban Transit Institute, and the UNC system. He has been published in journals such as the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Environmental and Resource Economics, Review of Regional Studies, Journal of Regional Analysis and Policy, and Transportation Research Part A. He is the co-editor of the scientific journal The Review of Regional Studies.
