Dr. Cole began his teaching career in 1978 at West Virginia University in Morgantown from August 1978 through December 1982 where he taught business finance and capital markets classes and published several articles on the risk and cost reduction impact of bond insurance and state bond banks on municipal (tax-free) bonds. He left to join Wachovia Bank in February 1982 to initiate and manage the Bank’s public finance department and from 1987 through 2002 held various management and business development positions within the Capital Markets Group of Wachovia in Winston-Salem, NC. He left Wachovia in 2002 as Senior Vice President in the Public Finance group responsible for managing the corporate tax exempt bond and student loan bond financing businesses, having grown these businesses to significant levels of revenues prior to leaving the firm. Cole joined the Capital Markets group at BB&T as Senior Vice President in August 2002 to initiate and manage the corporate tax-exempt bond and student loan bond financing businesses. He made significant contributions to the growth and profitability of BB&T Capital Markets Group during his 4 year tenure with the firm. 

In August 2006 Cole left BB&T to join the faculty of the School of Business and Economics at North Carolina A&T State University. As of August 2013 Cole is an adjunct assistant professor of finance in the Department of Accounting and Finance, where he has published additional articles over the past several years relating to conflict of interest, transparency and agency cost issues in the tax-exempt municipal bond market.
