North Carolina All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Awareness Program

Program Description:

The ATV safety awareness program prepares youth with safety education needed to operate an ATV. The program also promotes responsible, safe and ethical use of an ATV. The program stresses these five important areas:

1. use of personal protective gear

2. curtailing reckless behavior

3. allowing no passenger to ride

4. off-road riding only

5. fitting operator to machine

Target audience:

The program is targeted toward youths under 16. While it isn't recommended that youths under 16 operate ATVs, many are doing so. Therefore, safety education may help to reduce or prevent injuries to those currently operating ATVs or those who will operate one in the future. This information may also have an impact on other family members and friends.

Goals and Objectives:

The goal of this program is to provide educational information and awareness that will change the target audiences' behavior toward ATV operation.

Objectives are to:

1. reduce the potential for ATV accidents, injuries and fatalities,

2. promote safe, responsible, and ethical use of the vehicle, and

3. follow the rules and regulations when operating an ATV
