Plastic Mulch and Drip Irrigation

Small scale, limited-resource growers are provide with information and training about these technologies to extend their growing season and make more money. The program also encourages farmers to grow diverse crops and increase their farm management skills.

The equipment needed for laying plastic mulch and installing drip irrigation is available for demonstration and farmer use through this program. It is housed in four regions that span the state. Farmers have access to training and use of the following equipment by calling one of four local Cooperative Extension centers:

Mountain Region
Yancey County Extension Center
828.682.6180

Piedmont Region
Guilford County
336.375.5876

Southeast Coastal Plain Region
Robeson County
910.671.3276

Southeastern Region
Jones County
252.448.9621

Farmers can learn to use the equipment through hands-on demonstrations on their farms and by attending county Extension workshops. These workshops cover the basics of getting started in using both plastic mulch and drip irrigation.

The Plastic Mulch and Drip Irrigation program was originally funded by a grant from the Tobacco Trust Fund Commission. With its success, it has continued and has expanded to include assistance to school and community gardens.
