Child Development Early Education and Family Studies
The Child Development Laboratory (CDL) is a licensed, 5-star rated child care program on the campus of N.C. A&T that serves families with children 2- to 5-years-old. The facility provides the opportunity for students in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences to gain hands-on experience in early childhood education. Faculty and students also access the CDL to research family and child development issues.
The CDL not only reaches, but exceeds the standards for state licensure in areas including administration, programming, and nutrition. It is licensed and rated by the North Carolina Division of Child Development.
The Child Development Laboratory follows the “Creative Curriculum” for early childhood programs, which concentrates on providing children with an environment that is developmentally appropriate. The Creative Curriculum supports academic progress while respecting the way children grow and learn, in a context where children feel safe, nurtured, respected and where their physical, social emotional and pre-academic needs are met.
Our trained and experienced staff provides special emphasis on the spiritual and cultural uniqueness of the children and their families. Lesson plans emphasize experiences and relationships to build individual competence and positive self-esteem. Weekly curriculum plans and schedules are posted in each classroom. In addition to our regular staff, student volunteers and those assigned field based experiences offer assistance with sports and games, music, dance, reading, storytelling, cultural festivals, and classroom activities.
