She received her early education in Lynchburg schools - graduating from Lynchburg Seminary. She received her master's degree from Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia. Satterfield had a distinguished teaching career which spanned forty-three years. She taught for one year at Nash County Training School in Nashville, North Carolina; four years in Greensboro, North Carolina.
She then taught thirty-eight years at Person County Training School, which was later named Person County High School in Roxboro, North Carolina. When she retired, former students from one end of the country to the other sang her praises. Shortly after coming to Roxboro, she married Jesse Fountain and the union lasted for twenty years. Although she never had children, she managed to rear two nephews to manhood; Richard W. Hayes and William E. Knox.
In addition to the many nephews and nieces who remember her with love, there are hundreds of students whom she nurtured and inspired. She was an active member of the National Education Association and the North Carolina Teachers' Association. She organized the Classroom Teachers Division of the North Carolina Teachers' Association and was its president from 1949-1953. After she retired, she served on the Person County Board of Education.
