Welcome to the Department of Accounting
The Department of Accounting strives to be recognized nationally for providing a high-quality accounting education that integrates technical skills with the development of personal attributes necessary for the continuing growth and success of our graduates. To this end, we work to build competence in technical accounting knowledge and important skills such as communication, critical thinking, analytical, interpersonal, and technological skills. We offer competitive academic scholarships to assist students desiring to enter the program.
The Department of Accounting has a rich legacy of educating business professionals with a strong comprehension of accounting. The accounting program was accredited in 1986 by AACSB International, the first accounting program at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to receive this prestigious accreditation. In fact, only 176 schools internationally have earned specialized accounting accreditation. This recognition provides evidence of the Department’s focus on maintaining highly-qualified faculty and high standards in student learning.
The Department offers an abundance of opportunities for summer internships and permanent employment in public accounting and private industry. Graduates of the Department also have access to a broad range of employment opportunities in domestic and multinational businesses, government and not-for-profit organizations. Each year, the Department places students in permanent employment with Big Four and large regional accounting firms as well as Fortune 500 companies.
