What
should I study abroad?
Choosing the right courses to study while
abroad is a careful decision you should make with the assistance and approval
of your academic department and OIP. Courses are available in your major,
minor or area of interest.
While you can study abroad in an English
speaking country, you may want to consider using this opportunity for
intensive foreign language study and immersion. The language experience will
come alive for you both in and outside the classroom as you communicate daily
in the foreign language of your host country. In some countries you may take
your courses in English and still study the local language and practice it
daily.
When
should I study abroad?
You may study abroad for a semester, an
academic year or summer beginning your sophomore year. The best time to begin
planning your study abroad is during your freshman year. However, if you are
already an upperclassman, you may also study abroad. Here are the steps you
should follow to make this a reality for you:
Attend one of the
regularly scheduled general information sessions at
the Office of International Programs.
Begin researching
study abroad opportunities, available in your field of study or geographic
area of interest. There are many resources available to assist you in the
Office of International Programs, as well as Faculty Advisors for Study
Abroad. The best way to be prepared is to read, read and read. Also, talk
to international students and faculty on campus that may have visited or are
from the country where you plan to study. This is something the Office of
International Programs and the Office of International Students and Scholars
can assist you with.
Discuss your
interests with your academic advisor so you can begin to plan the best time
frame to fit study abroad into your overall academic experience. You will
want to discuss the on-campus requirements you need to complete, the courses
you want to take overseas and how they can be applied toward graduation
requirements.
Check application
deadline dates for the program you wish to pursue
and get your application in as early as possible before the deadline to
increase your chances of being placed at the university of choice.
