Born in Brooklyn , New York , Joyce Wellman began her study of the visual arts while earning her Masters in Education at the University of Massachusetts . She began attending workshops in printmaking during the 1970’s and studied painting in the 1980’s. In 1988, Wellman earned her M.F.A from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Wellman’s achievements embody a host of exhibitions nationally and internationally, references in notable publications, and various major public projects. Her work in Nairobi , Kenya included an exhibition of works for the 1 st Annual East African Women Artist Workshop and Exhibition in 2003.

Joyce Wellman’s art connects the physical to the metaphysical. Wellman uses shapes, numbers, markings, and colors to form a vocabulary meant to guide the subconscious on a journey through personal and general human experiences. For example, Wellman’s use of numerical collages is reminiscent of childhood memories of her mother playing, bolita, a popular gambling game that was the precursor to the New York State lottery. However, many numerical patterns also reference sacred geometry as found in several world cultures. Her work intertwines the mundane with supernatural; the sacred with the profane.

The University Galleries will also have public programming to compliment Wellman’s residency. These programs will demonstrate Wellman’s passion for art, technology, and community involvement. Among these events is a lecture and panel discussion with the artist and A&T faculty entitled Art, Internet, and the Global Audience which willtake place on October 20, 2005 at 4:00 pm . A youth art workshop will also take place on Saturday, October 29, 2005 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm .
