Joseph Holston, Boy in Red Cap,
Oil on Canvas, 1972, 40" X 32"

Joseph Holston’s art is geometrical and inviting to viewers with his usage of vibrant color. His works express movement with forms and color which extend meaning beyond the mere narrative. Joseph Holston is largely a self-taught artist with commercial art training; however, one can see parallels between his work and that of a number of renowned artists. These artists include John Singer Sargeant, Pablo Picasso, Romare Bearden, and Jacob Lawrence. Holston received mentoring from renowned artists and educators such as Lois Mailou Jones, Richard Goetz, and James Lesesne Wells. In addition, Holston ’s work was influenced by a stay in Africa in 1977 that encouraged his use of bold color to express emotion and compositional strength in his work.
