Fall 1999 Course Outline

Catalog Description

Understanding the principles of effective administrative and supervision programs sponsored by federal vocational legislation and administered by state and local boards of education; functions of state plans; and study of (1) program standards, (2) classroom supervision and evaluation, and (3) administrative and supervisory duties and problems (including inventories; equipment; co-curricular activities, public relations, department records, and staffing). The role and responsibility of the coordinator of occupational education systems and examinations of pertinent research and procedures in job analyses. Prerequisites: Senior standing and consultation with adviser.

SDPI Certification

This course is designed to provide instruction related specific North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction competencies for Business and Office Education. Request a hard copy of these competencies from your instructor.

Technology Competencies

The following Level 1 competencies are covered: Students use a computer to: (1) prepare written assignments; (2) operate the computer effectively by saving, copying, and printing documents; (3) demonstrate understanding of the components of a computer system such as the input and output devices, storage devices, and central processing unit; (4) demonstrate awareness of the impact of computers on education and industry.

The following Level 2 competencies are covered: Students will: (1) identify ways of incorporating computers in teaching business subjects; (2) use the computer to perform on-line library searches; (3) evaluate hardware and software needs. The course will also review some of the NC Advanced computer skills, in preparation for the state test.  Request a complete copy of these competencies from your instructor.

Goals and Objectives

The following are the course goals and objectives:

  • Explain the philosophy and major developments in Business and Office Education in the total education process.
  • Assess the impact of vocational education legislation on Business and Office Education programs.
  • Review programs of study and program standards, e.g. VOCATs and the NBEA Program Standards.
  • Review the relationship between Business Education programs and state and local agencies that support vocational education programs.
  • Examine issues related to classroom supervision and evaluation.
  • Review state accountability requirements and standards, e.g. ABCs.
  • Review criteria for an effective cooperative business education program.
  • Review current school-to-work initiatives.
  • Examine new technology and technological trends that are impacting business education.

Class Policies and Procedures

  • All assignments must have a title page.
  • Due dates for assignments must be strictly observed.
  • Late assignments will incur a penalty of 10% daily.
  • No make-up test will be given.
  • Class participation will influence your final grade.
  • Setting and Grading assignments.
  • Become up-to-date on other current issues related to business education.

September 3, 1999 Last day to drop and receive financial credit
October 4, 1999 Deadline to remove incompletes (for spring/summer, 1998)
  Deadline for making application for student teaching during Spring 2000
November 3, 1999 Last day to drop a course without grade evaluation

Course Evaluation

Assignments will include:  in-class and out-of-class written assignments, written and oral reports, a mid-term test and a final exam.

B 80-90
C 70-79
D 60-69
F 59-00

Tentative Schedule

Written assignments are due on the date indicated. Reading assignments should be completed by the date indicated. Late assignments will lose 10 percent of points earned per day.
