Biotechnology is the use of living organisms to solve problems or make useful products. Biotechnology is as old as the first domestication of crops and food animals and the production of foods such as bread, wine, and yogurt. In the last several decades, however, we have made rapid advancement in the understanding of the basic mechanisms of living organisms. These breakthroughs have led to the development of a series of technologies such as genetic engineering, molecular biology, cell and tissue culture, bioprocessing, bioremediation, monoclonal antibodies plus others. We now use these techniques to shape living organisms for the betterment of mankind in food production, medicine, environmental science, criminal investigations, and other areas of everyday life.
