Do you have a project or assignment that requires you to use historical economic data?  More than likely you can find it on the Web.  Government agencies, Federal Reserve Banks, and other groups provide access to a wide variety of economic data.   Here are some sites to get you started on your data search.  Links to both national and regional economic data are included.

A large selection of links to material on international economics, finance, banking, and stock exchanges.

FedStats

This site provides a central location to find statistical data from more than 100 agencies in the U.S. Federal Government.

Econ Data and Links

John Shaw of Cal State-Fresno has compiled a large list of current and historical economic statistics.

Social Science Data on the Internet

A collection of 850 Internet sites of numeric Social Science statistical data, data catalogs, data libraries, social science gateways, addresses and more.  This site from the Univ. of California, San Diego, allows you to search the directory or browse through the various annotated lists of data sources.

Individual U.S. and International Data Sites

EconoMagic

This is a comprehensive site of free economic time series data that can be transformed, graphed, and saved.  At this time, there are more than 100,000 time series for which data and custom charts can be retrieved.  A great site for viewing a wide variety of historical macroeconomic time series over a number of time periods.

Economic Report of the President (Data Tables)

From this site you can view the entire Economic Report of the President from 1995 forward and access the statistical tables from Appendix B of the Economic Report of the President as spreadsheet files (1997-forward).  The statistical tables include annual data on national income, prices, employment, population, productivity, international trade, the federal budget, and much more.

Bureau of Labor Statistics Data

The BLS site allows you to quickly obtain BLS time series data by selecting from lists of the most commonly requested time series.  The data are collected from various BLS surveys, programs, BLS regional offices, and the BLS national office. Within each list, you can select any one or all of the time series shown and choose desired date ranges and output options prior to executing the query.

Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED)

The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis provides access to its massive historical database of macroeconomic, financial, and monetary information. A great source for a wide variety of macroeconomic data.

Census Bureau Statistics

As the "Factfinder for the Nation," the Census Bureau collects data about the people and economy of the United States and produces a wide variety of statistical data. Included at their site is a variety of economic, geographic, and socioeconomic information.

Statistical Abstract of the U. S.

Current and recent versions of The Statistical Abstract of the U.S. are available on the Web.   Includes data on a wide variety of economic statistics at the national, state, and county level.

Penn World Tables

The Penn World Tables is a set of international economic data for 152 countries and 29 subjects, covering the period 1950-1998.  The data can be used to conveniently make international economic comparisons across countries.

Economic Indicators Monthly

Economic Indicators Monthly is published for the Joint Economic Committee by the Council of Economic Advisors and contains data on a wide variety of macroeconomic variables, including GDP, national income, prices, credit, and interest rates.

NBER MacroHistory Database

The NBER Database includes extensive economic data (including production, construction, employment, money, prices, asset market transactions, foreign trade, and government activity) collected by the NBER from the pre-WWI and interwar economies.

Economic Policy Institute Datazone

A selective list of data, primarily covering wages and income, broken down by gender, race, education, etc.  The focus is on trends in the distribution of wages and income.

USDA Agricultural and Economic Statistics

"The USDA Economics and Statistics System contains nearly 300 reports and datasets from the economics agencies of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. These materials cover U.S. and international agriculture and related topics."

The BLS makes state-level employment, earnings, and price data available at this site.

Demographic and Economic State and County Profiles

Censusus Burea data on individual states and counties is available from a clickable map.

Regional Economic Information Service

"The REIS database provides local area economic data for states, counties, and metropolitan areas for 1969-1998. Statistics in the data base include: personal income and earning variables, full and part employment variables, transfer payments variables, and farm income and expenses variables."

County and City Databooks

This resource provides Web access to the electronic versions of the 1988 and 1994 County and City Data Books.  A wide variety of state, county, and city-level data is available.
