North Carolina A&T State University Galleries seeks

VOLUNTEERS TO…..

HELP BUILD AND SHAPE THE FOUNDATION OF A CULTURAL INSTITUTION

There are numerous opportunities for volunteers to assist in the development of North Carolina A&T’s museum of African art and heritage.

We seek energetic and responsible individuals to become part of our volunteer team. This is a very exciting time for the museum, as well as for the university. Your help will create a place for learning, unity, and enjoyment by all who walk through our doors.

At this moment, we have immediate needs for the following volunteer opportunities:

Student Registrar (Object Cataloguing)

Volunteers are needed to take digital photographs of objects, collect information from museum documents regarding some objects, and transfer both into the museum’s database system called Willoughby . Willoughby is a database system specially designed for museums to store and display information regarding their objects on a computerized database. This system will bring the display of the prestigious A&T art collection to technological efficiency and create the primary source of collections information. This is a golden opportunity in creating a primary source of technology-based information on one of the most important collections of African and African Diaspora Art in the nation.

Preparator (Art Handling/Exhibition Set-Up )

This is an excellent opportunity to help with developing the design and placement of exhibitions. You will develop skills in properly handling art work and hanging art work, positioning each piece to allow for sufficient space in between, and handling different issues that may serve as a challenge or advantage in exhibition-design.

Tour Assistant

Volunteers who speak clearly and possess a warm personality are needed to assist with tours, especially youth tours. The curator is the primary docent (tour guide) of University Galleries; however, a volunteer will be given the opportunity to share the same tours with the curator. Volunteers will be given information on certain aspects of the museum’s and collection’s history that he or she may talk about during the tour. If there are any questions from the tourists on subject matter that the volunteer is not familiar with, the curator will answer those questions.

This is a great opportunity to interact with a variety of audience types from school children to international educators. Tour Assistants will be able to meet many people from different walks of life and possibly some who may serve as a strong career source for that assistant.

General Activities

Volunteers may also assist in general activities such as answering phones, taking RSVP notices for museum events, and assisting with delivering marketing or museum educational materials to different university buildings (brochures and exhibition schedules).
