To prepare citizens to compete more effectively in the global marketplace, the American Competitiveness Initiative proposes $380 million in new Federal support to improve the quality of math, science and technological education in K-12 schools and engage every child in rigorous courses that teach important analytical, technical and problem-solving skills. Building on the successes of the No Child Left Behind Act, the American Competitiveness Initiative will raise student achievement in math and science through testing and accountability, providing grants for targeted interventions, and using proven methods of instruction.

Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts III

February One Celebration

Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts III was N.C. A&T's keynote speaker for its annual Sit-In Breakfast on Feb. 1. Butts is pastor of the nationally renowned Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York and president of SUNY College at Old Westbury.

The February One celebration paid tribute to the four A&T freshmen who initiated the chain of events that changed the destiny of minorities in this country. The 46th Sit-In Anniversary Celebration theme was “Reconnecting the Past…Establishing the Present…Shaping the Future.”

On Feb. 1, 1960, Ezell Blair (now Jibreel Khazan), Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil and the late David Richmond requested service at the segregated lunch counter of the F. W. Woolworth’s store in downtown Greensboro. Their courageous act against the existing laws and social mores sparked the civil rights movement and resulted in provisions that enhanced the quality of life for minorities in this country.

Butts was one of the founders of Abyssinian Development Corporation, a comprehensive community-based organization, responsible for over $500 million in housing and commercial development in Harlem, and continues to help guide and support the daily operation of the not-for-profit organization. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Thurgood Marshall Academy for Learning and Social Change – a public lower, intermediate and high school, under the direction of the corporation.

A New York native, Butts earned his undergraduate degree in philosophy from Morehouse College and master of divinity degree in history from the Union Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry in church and public policy from Drew University. Butts has taught at City College in New York and Fordham University. He has spearheaded boycotts against several New York institutions for their racist policies and employment discrimination. He led a nationally acclaimed and most effective campaign in eliminating negative billboard advertising in Central Harlem and many communities around New York City. He was also at the vanguard of the issue of national rap lyrics specially targeted to women and violence.

Butts is married and has three children and two grandchildren.

The breakfast was sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs and the roundtable discussion by the Student Council of Presidents.

West Lectured on His Book
Democracy Matters

Dr. Cornel West, a prolific author, theologian and activist spoke to packed out crowds at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Feb. 3, in the Alumni-Foundation Event Center. The event was being sponsored by A&T Honors Program, Lyceum Series and Student Government Association.

West lectured on his book “Democracy Matters," where he returns to the analysis of the arrested development of democracy—both in America and in the crisis-ridden Middle East. He argued that if America is to become a better steward of democratization around the world, it must first wake up to the long history of imperialist corruption that has plagued its own democracy.

In his major bestseller, "Race Matters," philosopher West discussed his analysis of the scars of racism in American democracy. The book has become a contemporary classic, having sold more than 400,000 copies.

West is Class of 1943 university professor at Princeton University. He has held previous positions at Union Theological Seminary, Yale University, Harvard University and the University of Paris. Others books that he has written include The American Evasion of Philosophy and The Cornel West Reader. His Beyond Eurocentrism and Multiculturalism (Volume 1 and 2) won the American Book Award.

West was an influential force in developing the storyline for the popular Matrix Trilogy. He is the spokesperson for the box-office hit series and has had recurring roles in the final two volumes.

West serves as an honorary chair of the Democratic Socialists of America. He has worked with numerous political and social organizations, including co-chairing the National Parenting Organization’s Task Force on Parent Empowerment. He was also part of President Clinton’s National Conversation on Race.

The lecture was part of the University’s 6th Annual Think Tank.
