Accomplished actor Avery Brooks and Vicki Kilimanjaro congratulate Dr. John Marshall Kilimanjaro at the dedication of the Kilimanjaro Lobby in the newly renovated Paul Robeson Theatre.

North Carolina A&T dedicated the Kilimanjaro Lobby during the grand opening of the renovated Theatre on March 19. Kilimanjaro served as Professor of English at A&T and established the Department of Speech and Theatre Arts in 1969. He founded the Paul Robeson Theatre in 1970, served as executive director of the Theatre and the Richard B. Harrison Players from 1970-1981. He produced more than 80 major plays and musicals. Kilimanjaro is also founder and publisher of The Carolina Peacemaker, Greensboro's African American weekly newspaper.

It was fitting during this special occasion for Avery Brooks to do a stellar performance of the play, Paul Robeson by Phillip Hayes Dean based on the life of Paul Robeson. The acting, choreography, and musical talent displayed by Brooks was electrifying. Aside from Broadway plays and Shakespearean roles, Brooks is known as Captain Sisko in the Star Trek series Deep Space Nine, as Hawk on the series A Man Called Hawk and opposite Robert Urich in Spenser For Hire. Brooks is an associate professor in the Theatre Department at Rutgers University.

Thanks to North Carolina A&T’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, students from Ben L. Smith High School and The Early College at Guilford (ECG) participated in the 2005 FIRST Robotics Competition held at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, March 3-5.
