WNAA announces plans to air Tavis Smiley Show

Radio station WNAA, 90.1FM announces plans to air The Tavis Smiley Show from Public Radio International. A high-energy exchange of views, information, and insight hosted by the incomparable Tavis Smiley, the weekly two-hour show will begin airing Fridays(s), July 8, 2005, at 6:00 pm.

"Tavis Smiley is extraordinary," says General Manager Tony Welborne. "His incredible intellect, razor-sharp wit, and charismatic charm make for a terrific host, and his show is a welcome addition to our schedule. We're proud to bring his much-needed perspective to our discerning public radio audience."

The Tavis Smiley Show offers a unique blend of news and newsmakers in expanded conversations, including Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, former President Bill Clinton, poet and author Maya Angelou, and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). Smiley also shares the mic with regular high-profile commentators Cornel West, Connie Rice, J.C. Watts, and Michael Eric Dyson. Topics range from timely national issues to world events, from breaking news to ongoing cultural trends, often examined for their particular relevance to African Americans.

Tavis Smiley is one of the nation's most prominent media personalities. He hosts Tavis Smiley on PBS and is a regular political commentator on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. Texas Southern University honored him with the opening of The Tavis Smiley School of Communications and The Tavis Smiley Center for Professional Media Studies, making him the youngest African American ever to be so honored.

Recipient of numerous honorary doctorates, including one from his alma mater, Indiana University, he established the Tavis Smiley Foundation "to enlighten, encourage, and empower black youth." He has authored eight books — including The Unfinished Agenda of Brown v. Board of Education, Keeping the Faith, and On Air: The Best of Tavis Smiley — and has his own imprint (Smiley Books) with Hay House. He lives in Los Angeles.

The Tavis Smiley Show is produced by Smiley Radio Properties Inc. and is distributed nationally by Public Radio International. It is supported in part by Wells Fargo and Kaiser Permanente.

WNAA-FM, 90.1 MHz. is Greensboro’s local Public Radio International affiliate.

A&T Delegation Safe in London

The Architectural Engineering Program at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has an associate professor, his son and two A&T students on an educational tour of London, England, and Paris, France.

Tour leader and N.C. A&T associate professor Ronnie Bailey (shown above) said this morning that all participants in the delegation are safe in London. University officials have been communicating with Bailey following the recent transit blasts in London.

“We feel very blessed that our A&T delegation is safe,” said Dr. Joseph Monroe, dean of A&T’s College of Engineering. “Our thoughts, prayers and concerns also go to all the residents of London.” Monroe said close communication links have been established between the University and the students in the delegation as well as their parents.

The A&T delegation arrived in London on July 5. The educational tour was designed to enhance A&T students’ education in other cultures.

“Our educational tours provide diverse opportunities abroad and directly tie to the University’s globalization goals,” said vice chancellor David Hoard.

Program participants were scheduled to experience the diversity that exists among other cultures especially in architectural structures in London and Paris. Seminars were held prior to the trip aboard on the do’s and don’t of traveling abroad and how to raise funds for the tour.

Bailey has led the annual educational tour to London and Paris for several years and worked as a consultant with the faculty at Oxford Brookes University in Oxford, England, to help provide a summer program for A&T students, other U.S. universities and countries.

Aggie Promotes Automatic Draft

Every year around June I start to feel guilty because that’s when I realize that once again, I did not contribute enough to the A&T Alumni Giving Campaign. And every year around June I look at my bank account and realize I don’t have excess money to contribute so… I just make a small contribution. But this year, I feel great about my contribution. What changed? This year I signed up to have the A&T Development Department automatically charge my American Express Account a set amount of money each month. It’s easy, painless and it eliminates that guilty feeling in June. So I recommend to every Aggie to contact the A&T Development Department to set up an automatic draft program.
